It's sort of that, but it's really not like that at all. It's just your standard Animal Crossing game... in board game form. It's calming, it's peaceful, it's a tad repetitive, and it's filled with the quirky phrases and characters that have made Animal Crossing so loved in peoples' hearts.
I like that you are rewarded for playing more.
The more rounds of the board game you play, the more you unlock to change the way the game is played. So far, I've played about 5 different months, and I've unlocked the ability to add the cafe and a community project. This should be familiar to people that have played New Leaf, as it's a different take on a similar concept. I've also unlocked the mini-game area and all but three of the mini-games.
You "pay" for the upgrades to the board game itself, and unlock new mini-games with tickets that are earned through the "Happy Points" you earn from the board game and the mini-games.
This in itself makes the game incredibly replayable. Not to mention, the amiibo figures that are used as the game pieces save your progress. The more you play and the more Happy Points you earn, the more outfits and emotions you can unlock.
My roommate has Tom Nook at Level Three, and I keep playing with different figures each time.
Everything is explained in game in steps, and it takes time to unlock everything, much like the way the true Animal Crossing games are set up.
The Animal Crossing Amiibo cards can also be used in this game to add characters to your board game's town, and to play the mini-games. The Amiibo card animals cannot be used to play the board game initially, but if you use a card of a character that's in a town they can come roll the dice for you.
If you like board games and Animal Crossing, this is great for you.
If you're looking to have something fun to play with people that aren't completely into video games, this is great for you.
If you are throwing a party and want to have a party game, this probably isn't for you unless everyone there is into Animal Crossing or isn't interested in being competitive.
So, in short, (TL;DR) :
If you love Animal Crossing and you're on the fence about getting this, just get it. It's good, and if you really enjoy the true games themselves for what they are, you're going to enjoy this for what it is too.
It's just nothing like a Mario Party game, and to be honest, I don't think it was ever meant to be compared to it, save for the game board-like mechanics.
I think this is one of those games where you'll love it or hate it. It's a lot like the old Mario Party games: a glorified board game with mini games thrown in. So far it's a big hit with the rest of the family. We all pick our favourite character, settle down with some hot chocolate (or wine) and play it together in the evening. Having the amiibo as game pieces isn't as irritating as I thought it would be, it just makes it feel more like a real board game.
Surprisingly, what I enjoy most is unlocking stuff to customize the board. There are some stuff (like the windmill) that's purely aesthetic, but then there're others (like the Café) that will expand the board with more paths to travel in-game. You can also tap amiibo cards and get villagers to move into houses on your board. I haven't seen a big use for them yet, but I can say Octavian's house looks really cool and he wanders around while I'm playing.
On the flip-side, this is not a game I would enjoy playing by myself. It would be like playing Monopoly or Life by yourself. XP There are NPCs that can play against you, but it's just not the same. So if you don't have family or friends to play it with you, I don't think it'll be worth your money because it would get boring very quickly.
Overall I love it. It's fun to play with my family and it's got the usual cute/colourful graphics you can expect from an Animal Crossing game.
PS: Joan will become your most hated character after a few games.
Honestly looking at this game objectively and having bought and played it i can say it is a legitimately fun board game. The only thing missing is a literal board. The use of amiibo as game pieces is reminiscent of Monopoly and is a great way to make use of the characters. The decision to use Animal Crossing characters and put it in the light and fun world of Animal Crossing provides a wonderful setting for a game that plays out similarly to The Game of Life and the turnip stock market is a wonderful mechanic. Factoring in the price of the two included amiibo and the game i can safely say a $60 is worth it. If you are looking for a party game or family game that is light-hearted and fun for all ages i recommend this game.
The only drawbacks for me personally are:
1) There could have been more mini games, which I hope will be added in a future update but considering how Nintendo utterly abandoned Mario Party 10 (which felt pretty incomplete and lacking in content and variety), that's probably just wishful thinking. On that note, this would give the player more to spend the inevitable excess of Happy Tickets they will collect after completing board games on. Currently, they're just piling up with nothing to spend them on since I unlocked all available mini games.
2) There seems to be an intermittent glitch in the Quiz Show game where the album cover of the song you're supposed to guess is visible, usually making the answer obvious
To sum it up, this is a relaxing, charming game to play alone or with someone else. If you enjoy the core Animal Crossing series AND are looking for a new way to experience its universe, I recommend trying amiibo Festival for yourself before being swayed by all the naysayers. You just might be glad you did.
EDIT: I just learned that Happy Tickets can also be used to customize the board game, which is pretty fun :)
