This film was well... bat-s*** crazy. It was a manic, staccato riffing, fourth wall shattering romp. Deadpool did not so much appear on screen as it simply rampaged. DP is just such a brilliant amalgam of genres ranging from romance to revenge laden thriller. This is the wildest film (of any genre) I have seen in ages. Reynolds killed it in every sense of the word. The film was shot for a tiny budget, $35 million, which for an independent film would be a fortune, but for a Marvel based potential franchise - is a pittance. The film looked fantastic and with the recent record breaking earnings being put forth this weekend, I am certain the sequel will attain an actual big screen budget. Reynolds puts everything he has on screen, physically and emotionally. His scenes with Morena Baccarin (Vanessa) are beautifully done and are very real. Their interactions of "one upping" one another as to who has had the s***ier life are jarring, unsettling and perfect. Both Wade Wilson (Deadpool) and Vanessa are flawed, damaged people. He is a mercenary described as "a little too warm blooded" by his bartender friend Weasel (T.J. Miller) - whose comedic riffs rival Deadpool's own on occasion. Vanessa meanwhile is a prostitute. The connection between the two is magic. Their chemistry burns the screen which segues to my next point. This is an adult film. The sexual situations alone between Wade and Vanessa ensure this. The violence is beyond anything the comic book genre has ever seen with the notable exception of Matthew Vaughan's "Kickass", a "real" take on being a superhero. This film, however, is revolutionary as far as redefining the superhero genre.
The scene where Wilson learns he has terminal cancer and his subsequent emotional reaction, along with Vanessa's, transforms this film from being simply a standard comic book movie into something with much greater reach. Ryan Reynolds has the chops to make this role his own. The mark he leaves on Wilson/Deadpool is indelible. Wade's decision to partake in a program he knows inherently to be wrong is presented with due desperation. The film is not linear, opening with Deadpool engaging some mercs while riffing to the audience. His cabby friend Dopinder (Karan Soni) has some hilarious male bonding moments with DP, including the young man heeding the demented hero's advice on "winning his girl."
The plot eventually flashes forward and resumes a standard linear narrative losing no degree of frenzy as it does so. The violence in this movie is amazingly brutal yet disturbingly funny. Honestly, DP might be the funniest thing I have seen in ages. Some lines had me gasping for air, including Deadpool's opening "Mama June" comments. The inclusion of X-Men legendary character 'Colossus' (Stefan Kapicic) while pure CGI - comes far closer to capturing the heart of this long time fan favorite than previous X-Men efforts has been able to do. Brittany Hildebrand's "Negasonic Teenage Warhead" is a great addition to Team Deadpool, presenting a depiction of a mutant not before seen on screen. She is funny, exceedingly powerful and simply gets Deadpool. The snarky exchanges between him and her occur organically and as such are duly funny.
Wilson's new home life via his relationship with his roommate Al (Lesley Uggams) is a study in inappropriate commentary and behavior. As with his later reconnecting with Vanessa, one must look beyond the vulgar, depraved banter and see the heart of all characters. Not everything physically ugly is truly ugly. Colossus took some lumps from both villain Angel Dust (Gina Carino) and fans to a lesser degree for being more or less straight man to Wade Wilson/Deadpool. You need a straight man, however, to get the comedy to kill and kill it does. The profanity in this film is also epic and as incessant as the Merc with a Mouth's chatter. An earlier line by Wade fairly encapsulates who he is..."I don't make s***s,.... I disturb them". Ed Skrein's "Ajax"/Francis Freeman is properly evil. His treatment of Wilson and his fellow "patients" reveals a deep level of depravity. His fight sequences with Deadpool are incandescent, up to an including their initial run where Wilson essentially wails on him before the X-Men's intercession. The blend of comedy and horror is quickly offered with Deadpool trying to incapacitate the metal skinned Colossus. Watching him break both his hands and leg against his much larger opponent is unsettling. Have him joke while he does so, up to and including his "one legged man in an ass-kicking contest" comment is vintage Deadpool. The origin story easily explains away Wilson fragmented take on well...everything. His asking "which prof. X, MacAvoy or Stewart? That timeline thing is so confusing..." when Colossus shackles him and states he will take him to the X-Men's leader for guidance. A later self-awareness joke about the character's own self-awareness is wondrous to hear. Another highpoint is DP creatively spelling out the name of man who left him a scarred, immortal ruin.
This is a film unlike any other. Reynolds' passion project is fantastic and the sense of play, action, drama and the notion that the viewer is witnessing something entirely unconventional adds to the subversive nature of this superhero genre epic. Even the end credit sequences and hilarious "cameo" by another X-Men fan favorite was twistedly delivered. Please note the presence of the strip club DJ. Deadpool is easily one of the best Marvel films put forth, although this is a Fox project, the brand is unquestionable. It is such a bizarre adventure that we are witnessing something new, something truly, liberatingly mad. It is also insanely good. "Deadpool" is simply outstanding and well worth your time.
