For starters, you MUST have a Neutral wire in your switchbox to use these dimmers. That is generally the White wire, and owing to sometimes dubious electrical work, you may not have a neutral inside your switchbox. Don't blame the dimmers if there's no neutral.
Second, these dimmers are a tight fit. Again, if your switchboxes are adequately sized and the electrician who wired them did a decent job, this will not be an issue. And even if at first glance inside the box you think the dimmer won't fit, take your time and see if you can move some wires around to make it fit.
Hopefully you haven't been scared off by these caveats because in every other sense these are great dimmers! They work perfectly, are super-easy to integrate with your home automation, look great and are ridiculously inexpensive.
Once you get the dimmer installed in the wall-box you can snap on the included screwless cover. What? A screwless cover that would normally cost another $3-8 is included? Yup. If the dimmer is installed in a multi-gang box alongside other switches, don't forget to remove the snap-cover mounting plate. This allows the dimmer to sit flush to the plate with other devices and it fits right in with clean, modern Decora devices.
So there are 3 things that I was looking for in the operation of these dimmers and this is how this one performed:
1) Manual operation is straightforward and easy to learn, with lots of great control options. Tap once to turn the lights on or off to their preset value. Great if you want to always go to a particular setting. Hold the button down to power up the light at full intensity. A great feature that's a faster than stepping up the brightness manually.
2) Automated operation is also great, whether you use the Kasa app or as in my case, Amazon's Alexa. I can't speak for other brands but the integration between Kasa and Alexa is great. The dimmer offers multiple presets and you can recall any of them right from your Alexa device, or speak out specific light levels (Alexa, 20 percent...).
3) Dimmers are not all the same, some cause lights to flicker, or they make abrupt changes in brightness as they are adjusted. These work exactly as you would expect them to. Smooth transitions, no flickering, and no abrupt drops from low level to total blackness.
OK, the kicker here is that these great Wi-Fi connected "smart" dimmers cost less than those old "dumb" slide dimmers you buy at the home improvement store! More features, more technology, greater functionality, less cost. That's the formula of disruption at play and the beneficiary is you. Go buy some dimmers!
I have 20+ units installed around my house, and they all work great. Motion sensor units work great, and the dimmer switches have memory, so the brightness level is always perfect.
Only downside is the height of the switch. They don't fit inside older (80's) boxes very well.
*** Just don't buy used switches ***
Often they come damaged, or the incorrect switch is in the wrong box. Not worth the hassle of a few dollars.
INSTALLATION:
Setup was easy, but I would implore anybody unfamiliar with wiring electrical things to take off the cover of their switch and study the wires. Don't touch anything! This is very easy to install if your wiring is right.
So, my understanding of the modern electrical code is that electricians aren't supposed to connect multiple things directly to a switch, but that doesn't they didn't back in the day. The instructions make it seem like you just connect four wires to four wires on the switch with wire caps, but that is only if your wiring was done up to current code. My wiring was a lot more chaotic with a light switch being used to piggyback power to a quarter of the rest of the house! So, just something to be very aware of for anybody unfamiliar with it. The app claims to guide you through installation but it literally is only for perfect, absolute best case scenario wiring.
If you open your box and there is a wire nut of white wires, bare copper ground wires, and just two black wires connected to two different screws (or slotted in the back with nothing on the screws) on the light switch, you should be good to go. If there are multiple wires connected to one screw, or multiple wires connected to one screw with additional wires coming out of the stabs in the back, your wiring isn't up to modern code and it will be a lot more complicated of a process that the app WILL NOT guide you through.
PROS:
The switches are reliable and will trigger when commanded with a phone, but we have a small house with good WiFi. We have two switches right next to each other in a gang box, but there doesn't seem to be any interference or anything. I was a little worried about that.
The switches also come with a decora style plate, which is nice. I recently bought a dumb dimmer and it didn't come with a plate at all.
The app is fine even if is a little cluttered with all of the their other smart products. Setup was very easy with the app.
So, I have one of those routers that has 5 and 2.4 GHz networks, but they combine it into one name, basically. So, like, I can't have my phone intentionally use the 2.4 GHz network. It just defaults to the 5 GHz one no matter what. This can be an issue with some smart devices, but not with these. Note that you do need a 2.4 GHz network, but it will work fine if your router combines the two.
The app also lets you do nifty stuff. So, we have two light switches in the kitchen that control two different sets of lights, but one switch is blocked by the kitchen table, so that switch is really annoying to use since you have to reach over the whole table. Well, I just used the app to basically link that one with the easily accessible switch, so now one switch will turn on both pairs of lights, although there is an understandable one-second delay between the second one turning off. We've had a few guests comment on how weird the delay is, but I don't care.
I don't know if the description even mentions this, but the subtle illumination is awesome! I didn't even know it had this, or that I apparently need it in my life, but there is a very faint glowing circle when the switch is "off" that makes finding it in the dark so easy. I love it! I almost want to convert all my switches to smart ones just for this.
CONCLUSION:
I'm really happy with these. They just work and do exactly what I wanted. Plus it has neat features I didn't even know I needed in my life. I'm beyond tickled.
Setting up the smart switch was a breeze in terms of the physical installation. The clear instructions provided made it easy to connect the wires correctly, and the switch itself is of excellent quality. However, when it came to configuring the switch through the companion app on my old phone, I encountered some difficulties. It seemed that my phone's compatibility was a bit of an issue, causing setup problems within the app. I was getting a bit frustrated until I decided to give it a try on my friend's newer smartphone, and the difference was remarkable.
On the new phone, the setup process was a walk in the park. The app was responsive, and I was able to establish a connection between the smart switch and my home network effortlessly. Once the initial configuration was complete, I was pleasantly surprised by how seamlessly it integrated with Alexa. Now, I can easily control the connected devices with voice commands, and the switch automatically connects after you set it up in the app.
The overall build quality of the smart switch is top-notch. It feels durable and reliable, giving me confidence that it will last for a long time without any issues. I haven't experienced any problems with it since the successful setup on the new phone.
In conclusion, this smart switch has been a game-changer for my home automation setup. While there were initial hurdles in the setup process due to my older phone, once I switched to a newer device, it worked flawlessly. It's an excellent addition to my smart home, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable and convenient way to control their devices. Just ensure you have a compatible device for the initial setup, and you'll be enjoying its convenience in no time.
